The Roosevelt Island Public Safety Department (PSD) is committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for residents, employees, businesses, and visitors. We protect the interests of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) while supporting the quality of life of the Roosevelt Island community.
PSD officers are uniformed peace officers designated by the New York City Police Commissioner and authorized under New York State law. The department operates as a division of RIOC, the public benefit corporation responsible for managing services and planning for the island's future.
PSD officers serve as the island's front-line public safety presence, providing 24/7 coverage, 365 days a year. We work closely with the NYPD's 114th Precinct, the Fire Department of New York, and emergency medical services to ensure coordinated and effective response to incidents on Roosevelt Island.
Our officers assist in enforcing applicable State and City laws—including traffic regulations—and are trained in arrest procedures, constitutional rights, and community-focused policing.
Beyond enforcement, PSD plays an active role in protecting island property, including public facilities, commercial spaces, and select residential buildings. Officers also help enforce island rules and regulations and work in partnership with community organizations to maintain a safe and respectful environment for all.
PSD embraces a community-oriented philosophy rooted in visibility, approachability, and trust. While guided by law and professional standards, officers are encouraged to know the island, its residents, and its unique character—reflecting the values of neighborhood-based policing in a close-knit community.
PSD does not tolerate crimes motivated by bias or prejudice. Incidents involving race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or disability are taken seriously and referred for prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. Officers receive specialized training in responding to bias-related incidents, sexual assault, and harassment.
