Staying safe on Roosevelt Island starts with awareness and everyday habits. These practical tips can help protect you, your property, and your personal information.

General Safety

  • Keep doors and windows locked at all times, including when you are home.
  • Have your keys ready before reaching your door; avoid hiding spare keys outside.
  • Store valuables and important documents in a secure location.
  • Do not open your door to unknown individuals without verifying their identity.
  • Report suspicious activity, poor lighting, or safety concerns to Public Safety.
  • If you feel unsafe at night, contact Public Safety for an escort.

ATM Safety

  • Use ATMs in well-lit, visible areas whenever possible.
  • Be aware of your surroundings before and during transactions.
  • Shield your PIN and complete transactions quickly.
  • Take your card, cash, and receipt immediately and leave the area.
  • If you feel uncomfortable or believe you are being followed, go to a safe place and seek assistance.

Vehicle Safety

  • Lock doors and close windows when driving or parked.
  • Keep personal belongings out of sight or secured in the trunk.
  • Avoid stopping for strangers; if concerned, drive to a well-lit public area.
